Tribal officials say the business will help the Puyallups replace dwindling federal revenue and help them attain economic independence.

The bingo hall opened for speed bingo Friday. Regular bingo sessions will begin July 10. A grand-opening celebration for the hall is scheduled to coincide with the tribe's annual powwow on Labor Day weekend.

The tribe was able to pay for construction of the bingo hall because of a large settlement with federal, state and local governments which paid $8 million in cash and land in exchange for the Puyallups giving up claims to land.

The 36,993-square-foot bingo hall, designed to look like a tribal lodge, is owned and operated by the tribe.

Tacoma city officials said they are concerned about traffic safety around the bingo hall, and are working with the tribe to extend an additional access road to the bingo hall so patrons won't enter the parking lot so near a freeway off-ramp.
